We analyze the evolution of the iPhone and its competitors (Part 1) — 2022

The iPhone will do nothing more and nothing less than 10 years in this 2017 what is falling! For this reason, today we decided to analyze its trajectory and how it has advanced with respect to the competition.

1º. iPhone original (2007)

The first iPhone , simply and simply called iPhone, was introduced by Steve Jobs himself. This was launched on the market in year 2007 , thus giving rise to the most iconic smartphone of all time.

And what features did this newly released iPhone have? The original iPhone consisted of 128MB de RAM , an processor from a single core to 412 MHz . Furthermore, this was sold in the quantities of 4, 8 and 16GB . But it was not because of these characteristics that Apple sold this device. According to the Cupertino company, the iPhone is revolutionary for having a large multitouch touch screen and his simple interface . And how was the screen? It was a screen 3.5 inches 320×480 pixels, which may seem very small by today's standards, but it was the perfect accompaniment to its 2MP camera .

And what was the competition doing in the meantime? Well, suffer a little, because the year of the launch of the first iPhone was quite hard for them...

This company was already engaged in smart phones , although they had little to do with what Apple presented. From that time Samsung had those mythical telephones with numeric keypad and folding. Although Samsung it would not take long to adapt to the market and launch terminals with a suspicious similarity to the iPhone.

Those of us who have been in the world of technology for a long time will remember this brand perfectly. Although it is currently falling into oblivion, Blackberry at the time it was a very promising brand. His own brand was that QWERTY keyboard that shared space with the screen on the front of the device. Oddly enough, what Blackberry considered a great advantage, Apple criticized as its main disadvantage.

2nd. iPhone 3G (2008)

The following year, Apple introduced the improved version of the previous model, the iPhone 3G. This new device had, as its name indicates, with 3G connectivity . In addition, it also had GPS , something that the previous generation did not include, and the capabilities were doubled, becoming 8, 16 and 32GB .

Except for that and a new color, white, this new mobile was the same as the first. That yes, Apple seemed to be striving in the software , which was the strength of this terminal.

Let's see what the rest of the companies were doing in the meantime...

Nokia released a device with a design that would mark the style of the company's terminals, and with a top touch button that would inherit its future mobiles. It is a very simple phone, but its variants have long been sold as mid-range and medium-low (towards the end).

At that time, HTC was creating the HTC Dream (formally known as T-Mobile G1). This was an Android smartphone whose main feature was a great touch screen and a great keyboard QWERTY that slides to the side.

And what was your operating system? Good question… and this was the primer smartphone con Android !

While HTC was launching Android, Samsung continued with an operating system that already existed, although it was not very common in mobile phones. This is the Windows Mobile , Microsoft's mobile operating system, which was present in its high-end terminal that year, the Samsung .

3rd. iPhone 3GS (2009)

This was the first iPhone to have the famous S . And what does that S mean? Most of you may already know it, but just in case, say what it means speed (velocity).

And obviously its features live up to its name. This new iPhone 3GS featured a new Samsung chip to 600 MHz , twice the amount of RAM ( 256 MB ), in addition to having a new graphics processor.

In addition to speed, other things that stood out about this iPhone were the camera and its operating system, iOS 3 . Refering to camera , we can say that he happened to have 3 MP and now allowed video recording .

2009 was a great year for the iPhone, and the truth is that there is little remarkable in this year for its competitors.

Among those that attracted the most attention was the HTC Hero. And why did it attract attention? Take a look at the photo below. Snap folded inward And no, this is not a Bendgate like the iPhone 6 Plus. Besides this curious design , we also have that little trackpad on the bottom.

4. iPhone 4 (2010)

And the first great change of design ! We went from a curved design to a more checkered one with a glass back.

But not only that. In this new generation, the iPhone doubled its RAM memory again in order to have 512 MB . In addition, with this device Apple released its own series of processors with the A4 . This would be the processor for the iPhone 4, which was going at a speed of 1 GHz .

The camera also underwent an improvement when passing to a sensor of 5 MP and allow recording 720p . But it wasn't all pretty… this iPhone hid a big problem that soon caused Apple trouble. This consisted of the loss of coverage by holding the mobile exactly where the antennas are. Although in the end, Apple showed that the case had been exaggerated by the media and that it was not that serious.

Now let's look at the competition. Because it is in this year that two of the great terminals that we have today emerged.

In 2010 Samsung began with its famous series of Galaxy S mobiles. And it is that in this year Samsung presented the first samsung galaxy s .

This device had 512 MB of RAM, like Apple's, and a processor of 1 GHz . In terms of capabilities, we have 8 o 16GB , although as in most Android devices, it supported MicroSD card.

This device was quite famous for being one of the best phones with Android available at that time, so it was very well received in the market.

Another series of phones that was launched this year was Google's Nexus series. Another terminal with Android available to the public, but in this case we are dealing with the first device created by Google itself: Nexus One .

This device had the characteristic hardware of the time, among which we have a Snapdragon S1 , one of the first processors of the Snapdragon series marketed by Qualcomm. In addition, it should be noted that this phone received many Android updates, as is currently the case with Google's own devices.

5. iPhone 4S (2011)

The iPhone 4S it was an improved version of the iPhone 4. And as with the S version of the iPhone 3G, this keep the design of its predecessor, except for the location of the antennas (which have been modified to improve coverage).

This new device has a new processor, the A5 , in addition to a new graphics processor much more powerful. East chip A5 maintains the same frequency as the previous one (800MHz – 1GHz), but has the advantage of being a processor of dual core , thus considerably increasing the performance of the terminal.

In addition, this new smartphone from the big apple company incorporated a new camera. With this, they premiered the 8MP rear camera that followed us to the iPhone 6S. In addition, it already allowed to record in the resolution 1080p .

Lastly, we can't forget about a feature that surprised people. And no, it is not a hardware novelty, but a software one: Siri . It was with this iPhone that we were able to hear the voice of Apple's intelligent assistant for the first time.

Let's see what the competition was doing in the meantime… Let's start with Samsung, Apple's eternal enemy, as far as mobiles are concerned. In that same year, it launched another of its most famous terminals. I'm talking about Samsung Galaxy Note .

This phone was interesting for several reasons, but without a doubt the main one is its screen. The Galaxy Note had a huge screen for the time, 5.3 inches ! …which may not seem like much, but back then it was outrageous. But how big was it? Yes, let's remember that the iPhone 4S was 3.5 inches...

In addition to its large screen, it also stood out for its famous built-in stylus , which was very useful for typing on that big screen. And how was it performing? His power was similar to that of his little brother, the Galaxy S2 So there was no complaint there.

A mention again to Nokia. But this time to present you the fruit of a relationship with Microsoft: Lumia 800 . The Lumia 800 could be the savior or bane of Nokia, but it seems that things have opted for the latter …

And what did the Lumia 800 do wrong? Well, nothing in particular. Rather, it was a combination of unremarkable hardware, unpopular software, and a bit of bad luck. And what operating system did this mobile have? had Windows Phone 7 , an operating system that seemed promising, but its greatest downfall was its app store , which was very incomplete.

This is all for the first part of this review of the history of the iPhone and its analysis with respect to the competition.

What do you think? What do you think was the best year for Apple? And the worst?
