See the downloads on your iPhone: this is where they are saved — 2022
Traditionally, the iPhone has lacked a good file manager where you can view documents, photos, and other information stored in the phone's folders. However, for years it has had an app that allows you to manage all this, being able to even more comfortably view the downloads that are made from Safari, Google Chrome and other browsers. In this post we tell you where you can find these.
The exact place where they are kept
If you have an iPhone with iOS 11 or later , you will have noticed that in your application drawer there is a folder-shaped called Files. This is the native file manager of your device, just like on Mac there is the Finder and on Windows PC we find the multiple document folders.
More about the Files app
Yes despite looking for it you can't find this app , you should know that despite being native and installed by default, you may have removed it. But do not worry at this point, because in the end you will be able to redownload it for free from the iPhone app store (you have a direct access in the link below).

When you open this app you will find several locations. On one side you will have iCloud Drive , a folder in which you can find all those files that you have uploaded to Apple's cloud storage service. Saving documents in this place is very useful if you later want to see them from other devices, whether they are from Apple or not. You can also view the content of other platforms such as Google Drive or Dropbox from this place, being able to edit, delete or add new files.
On the other hand you will have a folder called on my iPhone in which you can store content that will only be available on your iPhone. If you delete the app, it is possible that what is in here will be deleted, so you will have to be careful. On the other hand you have the folder just removed , in which the files you delete will be kept for 30 days until they are completely deleted, although you can delete them manually if you wish before the system does it. It will also be possible to recover these files and move them to another folder before they are permanently lost.
Also noteworthy is the possibility of adding labels to certain files and folders. You can use the default ones and edit their name or create new ones. It is a good way to categorize the different files to access them quickly by clicking on the corresponding label. However, there is also a search box at the top where those files can be located by typing their names.
How to save downloads on iOS
There are many types of downloads and the truth is that it can be confusing. Some of these, such as songs from platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify or Tidal, will be stored directly in these applications in order to be able to enjoy the content without having to be connected to the internet. The same happens with audiovisual content such as those from Apple TV +, Netflix or HBO. For photos, we can find the native Photos app itself as the recipient of these downloads.
The downloads of documents and other files that we carry out from the browser or another platform, which have the option to save in the aforementioned Files app. When saving the file, you can choose destination folder , as well as the name of the document. In the On my iPhone folder there may be a folder dedicated to downloads of this type of document, although they may also be found in others with different names depending on the file. For example, if you have the Adobe Reader app installed, you will find a folder with that name in which the downloaded PDFs will appear.
Regarding documents received through WhatsApp or other messaging apps, we have to say that unfortunately it is not possible to store them by default. If they are photos or videos, these are saved in a folder called WhatsApp in the Photos app. However, the audio and files are not stored anywhere that is normally visible to the user. If there is a document that you are especially interested in saving, you can open it with a specialized app and save it there. We return to the case of PDF and Adobe Reader, since if we receive this type of document through WhatsApp, they can be saved through said app and viewed later in Files.
In any case, there are many platforms and applications in which content can be saved through the extension corresponding for Files. This should appear when you click on the sharing options. In this section you can add cloud storage services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and many others that will work through this app, although you must have the original ones downloaded for them to continue appearing.
Safari adds a download manager
Although it is true that the methods that we have discussed above are completely valid, it can become somewhat convoluted. If you want to have a higher rate of productivity on a day-to-day basis, it is vital that you have quick access to these types of downloads. This is something that can be found, for example, in macOS browsers, where at the moment you have access to a list with all the files or programs that you have started to download. In this case, really important information is consulted, such as the amount of data that has been downloaded or the time needed to invest to complete the download 100%. This information for many people is really valuable, especially when it comes to large downloads.
Starting with iOS 15, Safari added the ability to have a download manager that is natively integrated into Safari. In this case, access is really easy to do. Simply, you will have to follow the following steps:
- Start a download on any web page through Safari.
- Look in the lower left corner of the address bar. An arrow will appear with a blue circle around the arrow.
- Click on this arrow with blue outline.
- In the dropdown menu, click Downloads.
- In the window that appears, you will see all the files that have been downloaded, but also the progress of those that are starting.
In this case, in each of the files that exist in the list, you will see a magnifying glass. You are going to click on it in order to preview the document. In this way you will have access to different options in order to share the document or make annotations.
Change download settings
Once you know where your iPhone downloads go, it's time to know how to manage them. If the default configuration that exists does not convince you too much, you will find the possibility of making certain adjustments so that they are stored in the place you prefer. We tell you all this below.
Change download folder
If you want to be able to change the location of the downloads, you should know that you can. You may want them stored directly on your iPhone or, alternatively, in iCloud Drive so that they are automatically synced to the cloud and can be accessed from other devices. In order to change all this, you just have to follow these simple steps:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap on Safari to open the settings for this app.
- Now click on Downloads.
- Where it says Save downloaded files in select the location you prefer:
- Locate the exact file you want to move.
- Long press on the file.
- Select the Move option.
- Choose the new location where you want to take it.
iCloud Drive:will be saved in the Downloads folder of this. On my iPhone:they will be stored in the Downloads folder on your device. Other:you can manually choose a folder within iCloud Drive or your iPhone.
Move them to another folder manually
Unfortunately it is not possible to request a location every time of download as it happens in the Mac, something very practical to decide at each moment where you want them to be saved. However, you can later move the downloads manually in a very simple way. To do this, you just have to follow these steps that, in addition, will help you to always move any type of file.
It should be noted that you can also copy the file so that it is in several locations at the same time. And if what you want is move multiple files at once you just have to click on the three dots icon, then select all those files and, holding down, drag them to the new destination location.
Make the download list clear automatically
It should be noted that from the previous settings shown it is also possible to select the frequency with which you want the list of downloads to be deleted. This it does not mean that the downloaded files are deleted , but simply the Safari list showing your daily downloads. You can choose to delete them after a day, when the download is complete, or never delete them unless you do it manually.
To this are added different shortcuts that can be configured in order to automate this task that can be really annoying. In this case, these shortcuts will be easy to find online, but you will also be able to dare to design them yourself in Shortcuts.
