Other tips to increase the security of your network — 2022
We recently discussed some key measures to increase security bycreate your local network from the Macor the existing one in your home, focusing on the wireless network (WiFi). We did that in the article. Increase the security of your WiFi network with these simple tricks , which we strongly recommend you read. Well, in that article some issues remained pending, which, although less important, do not deserve to be forgotten. So here comes the second part of the first article.
Other additional security measures
The two previous sections are key, especially the first. Now that we have seen those two sections, we will see other additional measures that, although they are not strictly necessary, far from it, at some point they may be of use to us.
It's probably not the first time you've heard about opening ports on the router. But what is this for? This is used if we want it to be possible access directly to a device on our network. Which is useful if for example we want host a web page on our computer and we want can be accessed to her from the Exterior . But it is something that does not have a great purpose if you are not thinking of doing something the same or similar.
And risks can bring with it the opening of some ports? This action is one that is not without risk. Doing this we allow someone from the outside can directly access a port of an IP (of a device) on our network without going through router technologies such as NAT , for example. Therefore, by having open ports we are exposing ourselves. Although there are times when there is no remedy but to do so, and for that there are additional security measures that we can implement.
And how to check if we have open ports? This is a very simple thing to see. Just go into the Open Ports option, Port Forwarding or similar and take a look at the forwarding table (option that in Xiaomi routers is under the menu of Advanced settings ). If we are not hosting a server or providing a service to the outside, there should be no ports open. It must be taken into account that theFirewall on a Macit can also interfere with all of these connections.
Use a VPN
When analyzing security and confidentiality there is a sensitive issue. do How much does our operator know (OBLA and/or ISP) about our communications? The truth is that if they want they can analyze all our communication that is sent unencrypted (hide). And in fact, by law they have to keep a certain record.
And what can we do if we don't want our provider to not even know what pages we are on? That's what the VPN o Virtual Private Network.
Business VPNs make intermediaries between us and the web servers with which we want to communicate. In this way, everything is sent packed (they mediate what is technically called a tunnel) so that the operator cannot know what we send or to whom . Of course, for all this to work, you must trust that the company that provides us with the VPN is not going to keep any records.
Two VPN models
Now comes the important thing… how do we set up a VPN? For this we have two possibilities:
Keep your router up to date
This is something that is said with almost everything. Regarding security issues, it is important to have our devices updated , and the router is no less.
This is something that can usually only be done on routers purchased by us. But it is something that is interesting to do in case a part is fixed in one of the updates. And doing so is as simple as going to the router interface, as we have previously explained in this and other articles. Then we'll head to the updates section (which in the Xiaomi it's in Basic Settings and there in Information).
As we can see, this is a quite extensive topic . And that we have left a lot without commenting and we have simplified everything! Even so, what is discussed in these two articles (the present one and the previous one, whose link you will find at the beginning) is something that should be known. Yes indeed! None of this matters if you don't have be careful how you use the internet .
And you do you think? Do you consider your network to be secure? Do you have any additional security measures that we haven't mentioned?
