Notch, screen, colors and other news of the iPhone 12 — 2022

We are four months away from the hypothetical Apple iPhone 12 event and despite this, as happened in previous years, we already know many of its novelties. In this post we tell you the highlights regarding the flagship of the Cupertino company of this 2020.

Finally a blue iPhone?

If we go back to the iPhone 5c or the most recent iPhone XR, we see that Apple has really already incorporated a blue color into its range of smartphones. However, this color has never materialized in the highest-end phones and especially in a darker color. For years we have received a multitude of information that pointed to what would happen, but it always ended up being more a wish than a reality.

iPhone 12

This 2020 could already be the year in which we see a newiphone colorhigh-end with a nice blue built with frosted glass of high quality as the main material, practically identical to that of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. It is true that this could go to waste and be a false rumor again, but this time it seems that many more analysts and sources close to Apple point to yes we will see.

Notch reduction and 120 Hz refresh rate

For better or worse, the famous iPhone eyebrow known as 'notch' came to the iPhone X in 2017 to stay. You will like it more or less, but in the end it is the only possible solution to be able to have a highly reliable and efficient biometric sensor such as Face ID. However, Apple has managed to find a way to reduce it and it seems that this year, at least in the 'Pro', we will find a considerable reduction that will make us gain more screen on the front. As a black part, this will cause theiPhone 12 tempered glassmay not be identical to previous models.

Precisely the Face ID housed in the True Depth sensor of the notch will have a larger detection angle. In the latest devices we have already seen that this aspect has been improved, but unfortunately it is still not possible to unlock them with the mobile phone rotated or having them on a surface such as a table. We do not know if the latter will be possible in the new terminals, but it seems that they will work in horizontal as it already happens in the iPad Pro.

Both in the iPhone 12 successors to the 11 and in the Pro range there will be OLED panels, definitively abandoning the LCD. The main difference between both ranges would be in the refresh rate, which could be up to 120 Hz in the top of the range, equaling what the iPad Pro of 2017 already incorporated. Of course, to save battery this function could have the option to turn off or set to 90 Hz in some applications.

Rear cameras with LiDAR sensor

Today we see Augmented Reality as a technology yet to be exploited, which we have not yet managed to find a use for in our day-to-day lives. However, Apple has been exploring this field for years and even added a LiDAR sensor specialized in it in its recent iPad Pro.

Precisely this mentioned sensor would make an appearance in the iPhone 12 Pro accompanying the triple camera that we already saw in the 2019 devices. The news in this area that we will see at WWDC 2020 on June 22 could be accompanied by many others in the keynote of September.

As for cameras as such, we would have a improved image stability for both photos and videos. To this would be added a ToF sensor that would improve the depth of the photographs, as was already known last summer when this feature of the iPhone 12 was first discussed.

Design change on the edges

Beyond the changes in the front and in the back, the iPhones have been since 2014 without having changed their edges. These have been getting thicker or thinner, but have never changed their curved style. In this year's iPhone it seems that this will change and we will see some flat edges very similar to those of the iPad Pro and that would remind the classic iPhone 4 and iPhone 5.

The set of final materials that these new mobiles will have would be more resistant than the current ones. However, this will not guarantee that with strong blows they will not break. This resistance is more related to small falls or scratches, something that the iPhone 11 has already improved considerably compared to what is seen in devices such as the X and XS.

Price and storage options

Something that was heavily criticized in the iPhone 11 was the base storage with which these devices arrived. With the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro there will be no problems in this regard since all models will start at 128 GB. The settings would be as follows:

iPhone 12:128 and 256 GB with 4 GB of RAM. iPhone 12 Max:128 and 256 GB with 4 GB of RAM. iPhone 12 Pro:128, 256 and 512 GB with 6 GB of RAM. iPhone 12 Pro Max:128, 256 and 512 GB with 6 GB of RAM.

Another aspect that we have highlighted is the amount of RAM that these computers would have, which would be significantly increased. This will help the operating system to run much more smoothly and the performance to be much better.

The price is another of the aspects that is most asked about the iPhone 12. And the information that we knew about the little variation in the price of the iPhone 12 plus the top of the range that would continue to start from €999 is confirmed. The successor to the iPhone 11 would see its price slightly increased. Specifically, the prices would be as follows, depending on your internal storage:

    iPhone 12:649 and 749 dollars. iPhone 12 Max:749 and 849 dollars. iPhone 12 Pro:999, 1099 and 1299 dollars. iPhone 12 Pro Max:$1,099, $1,199, and $1,399.

Will COVID-19 delay its launch?

The coronavirus pandemic that has spread throughout the world has meant that Apple has already had to delay some launches scheduled for March. The development and subsequent production of the iPhone 12 seemed to be on track, but a few weeks ago we learned that they were finally a month late. This would imply that the device could reach the market in October or November , something that already happened in its day with the iPhone X.

What does not seem to suffer delays is the presentation event , since it would also come with the announcement of other devices such as the Apple Watch Series 6 and some more. The doubt in this case lies in the form, since it is early to know what the situation of the pandemic will be like in September and if events can be held with health security. In any case, it does not seem that Apple is going to take risks in this regard and, given the case, they could opt for an online event as will happen at their next developer conference.
